Grochówka
Grochówka is a hearty Polish soup, perfect for cold days, prepared on the basis of a smoked meat broth with the addition of peas, potatoes, and vegetables.

Ingredients
- 2literswater
- 300gmeat (e.g. ribs without bones, pork loin, shoulder)
- 300gsmoked meat (e.g. bacon)
- 300gyellow split peas, halves
- 4medium potatoes
- 1medium carrot
- 1small parsnip
- 1garlic clove
- 2tablespoonsolive oil
- 1small onion
- 1teaspoonflour
- 1bay leaf
- 3allspice berries
- 1teaspoondried marjoram
- 2tablespoonsfresh parsley
Instructions
- Place the meat and smoked meat in a pot with cold water, and bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat, skim off any foam, and add the rinsed and drained peas.
- Cook, covered, for about 45-50 minutes, or until the meat and peas are tender. Add 1 teaspoon of salt towards the end of the cooking time.
- Peel and dice the potatoes. Peel and slice the carrots and parsnip thinly, or grate them on a coarse grater.
- Add the potatoes, carrots, parsnip, and the whole garlic clove to the cooked broth with meat and peas.
- Cook for about 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender (some may start to break down).
- Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and sauté the diced onion. Add the flour, stir, and immediately transfer to the simmering soup.
- Add the bay leaf, allspice berries, and marjoram, and bring to a boil.
- The cooked meat can be removed from the soup, chopped, and returned to the pot. Sprinkle with fresh parsley.
